About Paint Between Lines
The concept for Paint Between Lines started a few years ago when I painted a bouquet of flowers. We had lovely paper stocks and I wanted to see how it looked if I coloured it in with watercolours. The way the printer toner sits on the paper meant it created a lovely border for the watercolour paint, with the paint repelling away slightly from the toner ink.
I found the experience to be really enjoyable, just colouring in using a brush was a relaxing activity. I stuck the illustration up on my pin board to do something with later. I recently started looking at this illustration and felt the time had come to push it into reality.
A big part of the concept of this business is having a tangible object that you can use, and having run our own greeting card business for over 15 years we already had the set up to make this happen. I love to illustrated using line work and wanted to create illustrations that were a joy to colour in. That had line work that wasn't all the same size that wasn't full of fiddly little lines.
I wanted something that would look lovely framed in the house or attached to a gift. Notes you could send your friends that look beautiful. An activity people could pull out if they had ten minutes or five hours. An activity that wasn't too difficult, but felt like you had achieved something.
